Diliman & U.P. Light Flight

Very few alive today know that Diliman used to be a low mountain. Its name is derived from the word "Dilim" or dark. "Dilim-an" meaning the shaded place, where the mountain left a shadow.
|
To pave way for the planned Universities that were to be established there, Civil Engineer Florencio "Pensoy" Moreno (who later became Secretary of Public Works & Highways) leveled the mountain. The first university to be built in that area was the University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus.
The University of the Philippines is a state-run school, and easily the country's finest institution for higher learning. The U.P.C.A.T. or U.P. College Acceptance Test - is the hardest, each slot yearned for by many parents & diligent students. It offers 296 graduate & undergraduate courses & is unmatched in its scope & range, in that it offers nearly every discipline & embraces all interests & inclinations.
Getting into U.P., an applicant doesn't just have to pass the exam - rather he must outscore everyone else in his batch of applicants.
UP Diliman is the flagship campus of the entire UP System, which has a total of 12 campuses throughout the Philippine Archipelago.
Traditionally, U.P. graduates are among the country's most patriotic. Many of our country's idealists & leaders studied here.
Nearby, as was originally conceived - are other universities: Ateneo de Manila (Loyola University), Miriam College (formerly Maryknoll College), St. Bridget's College, Philippine School for Business Administration (P.S.B.A.) and New Era College.
U.P. LIGHT FLIGHT
What used to be an informal club comprised of individual pilots, has become more than that.
Via the valiant efforts of Dennis M. Baltazar, permission to use U.P. Diliman's Golf Course had been obtained. While the golf course sports 9 holes, the flying area is limited to an open space near the National College of Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG) building.
Due to the limited space, only light airplanes & helicopters are allowed to fly there. Hence the name "U.P. Light Flight".
UP Light Flight is where different people from all over Luzon gather together, particularly on saturdays. A club is currently being formalized.
Regulars at UP Diliman are:
Jimbo Sison, Toti Alberto, Rolf King, Alvin Alcantara, Dennis Baltazar, Mark Alcantara, Robert Estiandan, Erwin Felisarta, Joey Lopez, Ricky Velasco, Robert Dominguez, Jojo Mariano, Fernan Ramos, Ellion Cham, Dr Mel Venuya, Louie Gamboa, Larry Favis, Erwin Dimatera, Jose Chua, Inigo Bilbao, Edwin Saliendra, Taziman Datumanong, Juancho Moreno, Arthur So, Arvi Alarcon, Jet Acuna, Mang Sid Fernandez, Robert Alarcon, Rafael Chua, Carlos Calica, Lee Pua, Miguel Verzo, Desthy Yap, Scratch Nodado, Louie Carballo, Ernie Lorenzo, Arthur Azcuņa, Gilbert Sicat, Carlos Umill III, Gino Punsalan, Mark Sicat, Roland Hilario, Paolo Lim, Jake Gomez, Davidson Sacluti & Joey Reyes.

Dear fellow modellers,
I was very glad to learn that there are still existing active modellers to rely on up to this time.
I am one of those active flyers in Malabon (dagat-dagatan) during the martial law. Most of my contemporaries are now silent key.
I hope I could join you sometimes in the future and meet my old time friends like Mr Fernandez(Sid) and Larry Favis who used to visit me in Tugatog.
73 and Mabuhay!
Basil
